Hong Kong mahjong online

The real four-player mahjong, Hong Kong style, against three computer players. Draw and discard, claim sets, and be first to call mahjong.

How to play

  1. Everyone starts with 13 tiles; the dealer has 14 and discards first. Flowers and seasons are set aside and replaced automatically.
  2. On your turn you draw a tile (it appears on the right, outlined), then click a tile to discard.
  3. When someone else discards a tile you can use, buttons appear: Pung, Kong, Chow (only from the player before you) or Mahjong!. Press Pass to let it go.
  4. Complete four sets and a pair to win. If the wall runs out first, the hand is a draw.

Scoring

Each hand is worth fan. Points double with every fan (capped at 10 fan); the player who discarded the winning tile pays double, and on a self-drawn win everyone pays double.

Questions

Can I play real mahjong online for free?

Yes. This is the four-player game, Hong Kong style, against three computer players: draw, discard, claim pungs, kongs and chows, and call mahjong. Free, in your browser, no sign-up.

How do I win a hand?

Complete four sets (pungs of three alike, kongs of four, or chows of three in a row in one suit) plus a pair. Thirteen Orphans, one of each terminal and honor plus a pair, also wins.

When can I claim a discard?

Anyone can claim a discard to make a pung or kong, or to win. Only the next player can claim it for a chow. A win beats a pung or kong, which beats a chow.

Do I need a minimum score to win?

No. Any complete hand wins here, even a chicken hand with no fan, which makes it easier to learn. Hands with more fan pay much more.

How is this different from American mahjong?

American mahjong uses jokers, the Charleston and hands from a yearly card. Hong Kong mahjong has no jokers or card: any four sets and a pair win, and fan decide the score.
